An Unexpected Trip to Nashville
Land Between the Lakes, KY
This past weekend I was able to hitch a ride with Crunchy (alright, I drove) down to Nashville on a quest to return Raleigh (the dog) to his owner. We used that opportunity to travel all over the Nashville/Franklin area (and a little bit of Kentucky too!) and take plenty of pictures. We arrived in Franklin, TN sometime after 4am CST…so after crashing hard for a few hours, we hit the road again and headed to Kentucky to check out the Land Between the Lakes!
We first stopped at a Bison and Elk Sanctuary, but both remained hidden in the heat of the day so we settled for some nice shots of the foliage.
We hoped to see some wildlife gathering around one of the many watering holes, but all we saw was a sea of Goldenrod.
Sunlight strikes a stalk of Goldenrod while we wait out the Bison/Elk.
We did manage to catch a handful of turkeys foraging in a field before we left the wildlife preserve.
The tall grass near Lake Barkley.
Some sort of hawk surveys the fields, keeping an eye out for it’s next meal.
As the sun started to get low over the western horizon, we headed back to the Wildlife Sanctuary in the hopes that the Elk and Bison would be on the move and it paid off big time!
A young Bull Elk grazes as the Kentucky sun sets.
The young Bull Elk moves on to another pasture.
A large Bull Elk emerges from the treeline and loudly bugles, catching the attention of all the ladies in the field.
I snapped a long exposure looking back over the Lake Barkley Bridge as we were heading back to Nashville for the night.
The following day, we awoke to Weather.com warnings on our phones about a thick fog that had enveloped Franklin. We quickly hopped in the car in the hopes of getting some awesome foggy shots of Franklin, but as luck would have it downtown Franklin was the one spot that wasn’t covered in fog! We headed to the Franklin Battlefield, and I’m quite pleased with that decision:
The sun breaks through the fog and casts rays through the trees on the battlefield.
The fog begins to lift.
A dew-laden spiderweb
A hungry squirrel quickly does the math and computes whether or not he can make the jump to a nearby tree (spoiler alert: he did)
That evening we went to downtown Nashville and I setup to record a timelapse. We were up on this overpass for a few hours (long enough to have the cops called on us), but it was worth it. You can see an unedited version of the timelapse below:
